Blah blah blah!

Cabin Leaders

Our program at Walden West Outdoor Science School depends heavily on our volunteer Cabin Leaders. Without Cabin Leaders, our program could not run as efficiently as it does.

A Cabin Leader is responsible for managing the campers when they are not in field class or in another activity. They stay with the campers overnight, get them ready for each day, and maintain order with 12-28 campers. They are also responsible for reporting any issues that a camper is having, as well as keeping the campers entertained outside of class. During field class, the cabin leaders are responsible for assisting the field instructors with activities and group management.

Cabin Leaders arrive the Sunday night before schools arrive on Monday. They receive training on organizing and managing large groups of children, as well as tips to ensure good behavior. Our Cabin Leaders have an orientation to get to know our site followed by scenario training for any issues that may arise throughout the week.

When looking for Cabin Leaders, we look for:
- a sophomore in high school or 16 years-old
- a positive attitude
- a love for working with children
- maturity, a role model for campers
- someone who doesn’t mind getting dirty (this is an outdoor school, after all!)

Cabin Leaders are given 80-100 hours of community service on completion of their work with the Walden West Outdoor Schools. The amount of hours given to each Cabin Leader is based on an evaluation written by the field instructor he/she hiked with throughout the week.

If you are interested in being a cabin leader, and think you meet the requirements mentioned above, please contact Rain by e-mailing her: Leigh_Axelrod at SCCOE dot org.
